Dear Friend,

The theme of this legislative session has been the majority party’s persistent, blatant, and unprecedented attack on the lives and futures of unborn children. In previous e-blasts, we’ve given you some of the most shocking examples. We’ve told you about bills being proposed that

  • allow abortionists to kill children who can survive on their own outside of the womb,
  • rob local towns of the ability to take action to protect the unborn,
  • force insurance companies to cover abortions for free,
  • encourage out-of-state abortion providers to direct those seeking abortion to Maine, and
  • makes abortion a state constitutional right.

Just recently, as we mentioned last week, we even saw a bill trying to give the governor broad-ranging powers to punish (for perceived “misinformation”) volunteer pregnancy centers that provide free services to pregnant women.

This is quite a list. And these aren’t just talking about fringe bills by far-left legislators. The governor of this state, whose party controls both houses, herself held a press conference advocating for the most extreme of these measures. So when we say this is an “attack” as we ring the alarm bells, you know that we’re not just giving you political rhetoric. This is a real battle—an uphill battle. We can only win if we speak up for life with everything that we have.

We know that our cause is righteous. Yes, many on the other side are sincere in their beliefs. There are even some on our side who can be insincere. But this isn’t about who is more riled up about the issue. It’s about the fact that the life of each and every child is a gift. It is a true gift, lovingly bestowed by the God of the universe. Who should have the power to take away that gift? We, together with the tradition that precedes us, affirm a simple answer: no man. Our opponents say it should be given to the very people who are paid by the state to take that gift away. Yes, our cause is very, very right.

This is why we have asked you again and again to, if you haven’t already, attend our Speak Up For Life events. Our Savior asked you to lay down your life for others. We’ve asked you to lay down a couple of hours of your time. And we can see it making a really difference already. We have two more events scheduled, both at 10:00 AM this Saturday (the 25th):

If you haven’t yet, you should attend. It will give you the tools you need to help save the lives of yet-unborn children in Maine.

And coming up is one of your first big chances to make a difference: Maine Right to Life is hosting its “Hands at the Capitol” event between 9am and 3pm on Tuesday, April 4th at the State House in Augusta. This is our big “Life Day” at the Maine State House. We will have a prayer ceremony outside the building, at least fifteen presenters/exhibits with more resources on the pro-life movement in Maine, and opportunities to meet your legislators. We need everyone, including families, children, and babies to come. This is our first big chance. All hands on deck.

Our Policy Director, Mike McClellan, says this all the time: State legislators aren’t like federal legislators. When a handful of their constituents show up to the Capitol to ask them to reconsider their position, there’s real pressure for them to listen. They know that five or six of you represent not only your votes, but the votes of your neighbors and friends. When enough people show up—especially on a work day, especially if their district is far away—even the strongest radicals will waver. We hope to see you there.

Sincerely,
Thomas Keith
Policy Analyst
